The Olympic Games, then & now

Process

First read through the whole of this webquest information.

Important elements in the scenario are time and place.

Minimum time available for this project is six lessons (of 45 minutes). Apart from class you are of course free to work on your project at home. In school time you are allowed to work in the computer area. But always go to class first so the teacher knows your are here.

This is your working order:

  1. Your teacher will introduce the project.

  2. Decide whether you wish to work individually or with a partner.

  3. Collecting information:

    1. There’s a lot of information on the internet about the Olympic Games. To help you get started do the following assignments. You will have to include the answers in your folder. You can find most answers on one of the websites mentioned under the ‘resources’ button.

  1. Now that you’ve gathered a lot of information, decide on content and lay-out of your article. You don’t have to use all the information you’ve just gathered in your article. Or maybe you want to add something else that you think is interesting. You’re free to do so, it’s your article!

    1. Write the article, using the grammar- and spelling checker on your computer.

    2. Decide which Olympic sportsman or sportswoman you are going to interview.

    3. Think of at least 25 questions you are going to ask this person. Also try to link it with the Olympic Games.

    4. Answer the questions as if you were this Olympic sportsman or sportswoman. Tip: you can probably find a lot of information on this person on the internet, but you might also have to use your own imagination to come up with an answer.

    5. Prepare a 10 to 15 minute interview.

    6. Tape the interview. In case you don’t have access to a video camera, you can borrow one from your teacher. Try to make it as original and creative as you can.

    7. Looking back (see feedback). Answer the feedback questions and add these to your folder.

Tools

Save everything you have produced in your folder.

While working you will keep a brief record of your activities. Use the following format and keep this in your folder:

File

While working you will collect and save prints and worksheets in a folder. Do not forget to make a complete list of all the internet sites you have visited. This folder will be handed in to your teacher. It will play a vital part in evaluating your achievement.

Role of your teacher

You will have to work independently for the greater part of the job. At times, of course, it may be useful to consult your teacher. You will do this anyway when you are stuck. Moreover it is a good idea to check with your teacher as soon as you have decided on lay-out and content of your article. You can always ask for your teacher’s opinion and advise so you know you’re on the right track.
